Crawford Thomas Recruiting recently issued the following announcement.
Whether you are looking for a second revenue stream, an opportunity that doesn’t require full-time hours, or simply seeking better work-life balance, these tips can assist in all of that. According to our friends over at FlexJobs, if you’re among the growing number of people seeking part-time work, here’s the question: what’s the best way to customize your resume not just for a specific job, but for part-time work flexibility that meets your needs?
Stating What You Want
As you prepare your targeted, creative resume, state unequivocally at or near the top that you’re looking for part-time work. If you’ve said plainly that part-time work is what you’re seeking, there’ll be less chance for confusion later about what you’re seeking as you progress in the application and interview process. If you’d prefer your part-time hours to be within a certain time frame, make that clear from the outset as well.
Stating Why You Want It
This may require a bit more finessing on your part. One place to explain your part-time job aspirations is in the summary section of your resume. This slightly more expository area of your resume allows you to talk not only about your qualifications, but also about your expectations for your new job. Your “value statement” may be as simple as saying that you’re “looking for a position that requires a maximum of 25 hours per week”, for reasons of work-life balance.
Highlighting Your Skills and Experience
If your background includes previous part-time or flexible work, make sure to shine a light on what you accomplished in those positions. Putting flexible work experience on your resume and hammering home—subtly—how flexible work options have been integral to your career advancement are another way of demonstrating how significant flexible work is to you. On the other hand, if you’ve been a full-time worker until now, leave no doubt that you’re ready to move on to greater career-life flexibility as a part-timer.
Having A Specific Search
This falls under the category of tailoring your resume for each specific job application: do your research to ensure that part-time work is a possibility with each employer that you’re looking to work for, or explore whether you can negotiate part-time work flexibility as you move through the job application process. The more you can target your job search, aiming specifically for employers who offer part-time positions, the greater your chances for success.
Now that you have these tips in mind, use them to customize your resume for a specific job and part-time work flexibility that meets your needs.
